Support Indicator – Process Guide and information for Registered Training Organisations
From 1 July 2024 Assessment Services are delivered to all potential apprentices and recommencing Australian apprentices prior to sign-up/commencement, to determine their readiness and ability to undertake an Australian apprenticeship.
The Support Indicator is designed to identify the need for extra help for potential apprentices to help set them up for success on their apprenticeship journeys.
The Indicator is not a formal assessment and does not impact the ability of an apprentice to commence training.
It provides an upfront indication of the potential need for additional support and does not replace a Registered Training Organisation’s (RTO) existing process to determine the support needs of their learners.
Points to note for RTOs:
- Where Support Indicator results suggest support may be required, the Provider will notify the apprentice’s RTO so the RTO is aware of the potential need for support and can contact the Apprentice.
- The Indicator does not replace the requirement for an RTO to assess all students on enrolment to ensure they have the appropriate Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) competencies for their chosen training course..
- Nationally, RTOs must assess all students to ensure their LLN skill levels are appropriate for their intended nationally recognised training qualification and provide access to the necessary support services. This is also in line with RTO obligations found throughout the Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015.
- If the Indicator results suggest that the Apprentice may need assistance with LLN, the apprentice will be informed by the Provider that their RTO will follow up with them.
- The apprentice will choose the RTO that will deliver their training. The Provider will then complete the Training Contract, which is a legally binding agreement between the employer and apprentice and will contain the RTO details.
- The State or Territory Training Authority notifies the RTO they are nominated on a Training Contract and provides the relevant data to the RTO. The RTO establishes the Training Plan and should ensure that the Training Plan includes details of LLN Support, where the RTO deems this is required, in Section 3 – Support Services.
