Creating stronger pathways from school to industry
School-based traineeships are giving students the opportunity to experience the workplace while continuing their secondary education, helping them build confidence, develop practical skills and make more informed decisions about their future.
Through WesTrac’s school-based traineeship pathway, students from John Forrest Secondary College, Ballajura Community College and Aveley Secondary College can combine classroom learning with structured training and hands-on industry experience.
Supporting students to explore these opportunities are Surajeey Santhirasegaram, Program Coordinator for Pathways at John Forrest Secondary College, Gemma Novotny, Head of VET and Careers at Ballajura Community College, and Mel Posener, Career Practitioner at Aveley Secondary College.
By helping students identify pathways that align with their interests, strengths and career goals, schools play an important role in preparing young people for the transition from education into the workforce.
The traineeship experience gives students the opportunity to develop communication, teamwork, independence and workplace awareness while gaining a better understanding of the different careers available within industry.
For some students, it can also provide a pathway into an apprenticeship, creating a more seamless transition from school into further training and employment.
Apprenticeship Support Australia works alongside students, schools and employers to support these pathways and help young people take their next step towards a rewarding career.
