Noel Elliott, owner of Elliott’s Small Engines, shares insights into the journey of engaging with apprentices in the outdoor power equipment industry. He highlights how apprentices play a vital role in enhancing business efficiency and emphasises the importance of identifying the right apprentice and investing time in their professional development.
How would you describe your experience of engaging with an apprentice?
Challenging, stressful and rewarding.
How have apprentices helped boost your business capability?
Apprentices initially engage in simple and routine tasks, which allows technicians to dedicate their time and efforts to more complex work. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also improves customer satisfaction.
What advice would you share to help other businesses achieve a successful training outcome?
Choose the apprentice who is right for you and your business. Spend quality time with them, especially in the early months. Encourage them to push their boundaries to develop the skills and technical expertise necessary for the qualification they are pursuing. Treat every mistake as a learning opportunity. Encourage them to learn and even excel at the technical and theoretical aspects of their apprenticeship. Young people can be vulnerable; understand that and be there for them.
