Championing Women in the Skilled Trades – El Mauger

El Mauger is an apprentice who straddles two worlds: she is a BHP apprentice working as a Rail Communications Technician, and as a mentor empowering high school students with SALT as they explore careers in the trade. Here she shares her career aspirations and offers advice to those interested in pursuing a career in trade.

What do you envision for your future after you become qualified?

I hope to continue working with the team and further develop my skills within the industry while supporting new apprentices in our department. I would also like to continue teaching high school students basic tool skills with the ladies from SALT.

What do you wish you knew before you started your trade qualification?

I spent considerable time researching the qualification. I faced challenges within the mining sector while trying to secure an opportunity in the industry. However, I believe I prepared as much as possible before starting my training.

What advice would you give to a student today who is considering a trade career in mining/resources?

Definitely research the trade, speak to people within the industry, and maybe even look for someone happy to be a mentor to guide and support you through the apprenticeship journey. It would be helpful to see if there is an opportunity to do work experience within that role to ensure that it is definitely what you want to pursue. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t know something.
